L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione dei Magi del Perugino, realizzato dall’artista attorno al 1504, per l’Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi di Città della Pieve.

La grande architettura in legno occupa il centro della scena e funge da capanna, incorniciando parte dello sfondo, caratterizzato da colori vividi e pieni di luce.

La Madonna fa sedere sulle ginocchia il Bambino che il Perugino dipinse non più come un neonato in fasce. Mostrato nudo, già come corpo della salvezza con un chiaro riferimento eucaristico, il Bambino alza le due dita della mano destra per benedire il Re Magio che si inginocchia dinanzi a Lui.

I magi, seguendo la stella cometa, sono giunti alla capanna per omaggiare il Re dei re, assieme al loro corteo abbigliato in maniera esotica.

A destra si nota la presenza di San Giuseppe e, in secondo piano, il bue e l’asinello.

Cosa insolita per l’epoca, la Vergine mostra i piedi nudi che le spuntano al di sotto della veste e del mantello blu. In alto a sinistra si vede un solo angelo in volo.

L’affresco ha dimensioni notevoli: pensate che ha una larghezza di 6,50 metri per un’altezza di 7 metri.

The Christmas Works: The Adoration of the Magi by Perugino

The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the Adoration of the Magi by Perugino, created by the artist around 1504, for the Oratory of Santa Maria dei Bianchi in Città della Pieve.

The large wooden architecture occupies the center of the scene and acts as a hut, framing part of the background, characterized by vivid colors full of light.

The Madonna makes the Child sit on her knees, whom Perugino painted no longer as a newborn in swaddling clothes. Shown naked, already as the body of salvation with a clear Eucharistic reference, the Child raises the two fingers of his right hand to bless the Wise Man who kneels before Him.

The Magi, following the comet star, have arrived at the hut to pay homage to the King of kings, together with their exotically dressed procession.

On the right you can see the presence of Saint Joseph and, in the background, the ox and the donkey.

Unusual for the time, the Virgin shows her bare feet that emerge from under her dress and blue cloak. At the top left you can see a single angel in flight.

The fresco is of considerable size: think that it is 6.50 meters wide and 7 meters high.
