L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è la Natività dipinta a olio su tela tra il 1606 e il 1607 da Giovanni Lanfranco.

La tela custodita nel castello di Alnwick, in Inghilterra, raffigura la Vergine Maria che con un braccio avvolge il figlio deposto nella mangiatoia.

Con la mano destra toglie dal Bimbo la fascia che fino al momento lo aveva avvolto per mostrare il suo corpo agli avventori.

E’ notte inoltrata e l’unica luce che rischiara la scena è quella Divina che proviene dal Salvatore appena venuto sulla terra.

“Questo per voi il segno: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce, adagiato in una mangiatoia” sta scritto nel vangelo di Luca.

Diffusa la notizia della nascita, sono arrivati alla capanna a rendere omaggio al Re dei cieli pastori, donne e bambini.

A colpire in modo particolare l’attenzione in questo dipinto è la dolcezza dei volti e quella luce che squarcia la notte.

Giovanni Lanfranco era nato in quel di Parma nel gennaio del 1582 e fu uno dei maggiori pittori barocchi della scuola emiliana assieme a Guido Reni, Caracci, Domenichino e Guercino.

A Roma ebbe modo di realizzare grandi affreschi soprattutto nelle volte e nelle cupole, apportando non poche innovazioni alla pittura seicentesca eseguendo opere come la Trasfigurazione di Cristo con i quattro evangelisti nella cappella Sacchetti di San Giovanni dei Fiorentini.

Christmas Works: Lanfranco’s Nativity

The Christmas work I propose to you today is the Nativity painted in oil on canvas between 1606 and 1607 by Giovanni Lanfranco.

The canvas kept in Alnwick Castle, in England, depicts the Virgin Mary with one arm wrapping her son placed in the manger.

With her right hand she removes the swaddling cloth from the Child that had wrapped him until then to show his body to the customers.

It is late at night and the only light illuminating the scene is the Divine one that comes from the Savior who has just come to earth.

“This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger” is written in the Gospel of Luke.

Once the news of the birth spread, shepherds, women and children arrived at the hut to pay homage to the King of Heaven.

What particularly strikes the attention in this painting is the sweetness of the faces and that light that pierces the night.

Giovanni Lanfranco was born in Parla in January 1582 and was one of the major Baroque painters of the Emilian school together with Guido Reni, Caracci, Domenichino and Guercino.

In Rome he had the opportunity to create large frescoes especially in the vaults and domes, bringing many innovations to seventeenth-century painting by executing works such as the Transfiguration of Christ with the four evangelists in the Sacchetti chapel of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini.
