La Fondazione Perugia ha acquistato a un’asta viennese due opere del Perugino che da tempo erano in mano a un collezionista privato.

Le due tavole, entrambe dipinte dall’artista su un fondale color nero bitume, hanno come soggetti il Cristo coronato di spine, realizzato tra il 1497 e il 1550, e la Vergine del 1500.

Le opere sono un esempio della genialità del Pietro Vannucci. Entrambe le tavole presentano sul verso un rivestimento di pelle con impressi eleganti motivi decorativi e il monogramma cristologico, come per simulare la copertina di un libro.

In origine le due figure facevano parte di dittico collegato mediante cerniere, destinato alla devozione privata.

Le due opere olio su tavola furono realizzate dal Perugino in uno dei periodi più felici e prolifici della sua vita. In quegli anni era attivo a Firenze ed ebbe modo di conoscere sia la pittura fiamminga che la luce di Leonardo. Rimase affascinato anche dalle atmosfere Veneziane della lacuna, dove si recò più di una volta.

Nello sfondo delle tavole non c’è nessun paesaggio ideale o architettura prospettica ma solo il profondo nero su cui si stagliano i protagonisti della scena. Una soluzione inedita che Perugino utilizzò ampiamente in quel periodo e che è stata al centro, nel 2023, della mostra NERO Perugino Burri, organizzata proprio da Fondazione Perugia.

Prima di passare nel corso dei decenni, in varie raccolte private estere, è possibile che il Cristo coronato di spine e la Vergine abbiano fatto parte della collezione dell’intellettuale fiorentino Cosimo Bordoni, medico personale del granduca Cosimo III de’ Medici.

In un inventario dei beni del professionista, scomparso intorno al 1703, sono citati infatti “due quadri compagni del Perugino” raffiguranti “la Madonna e Giesù”.

L’acquisto all’asta dei due dipinti andrà ad arricchire la collezione artistica di Fondazione Perugia custodita nel Museo di Palazzo Baldeschi, in Corso Vannucci a Perugia, dove già si possono ammirare due opere del Perugino.

Le due nuove acquisizioni saranno esposte a partire da metà dicembre.

“Siamo estremamente felici ed emozionati di aver portato a termine un’operazione di tale valore artistico, culturale e identitario” afferma Alcide Casini, presidente di Fondazione Perugia: “Il ritorno in Italia dei due capolavori consentirà la loro piena valorizzazione e soprattutto la loro fruizione pubblica, come è nella missione del nostro ente. Le celebrazioni per il cinquecentenario dalla morte del Perugino, nel 2023, hanno ricordato all’intero territorio l’importanza assoluta di questo straordinario artista. Per tale motivo, questo è un successo dell’intera comunità, perché è per essa che l’acquisto è stato compiuto”.

Perugino: two works purchased at auction return to Italy

The Perugia Foundation purchased two works by Perugino at a Viennese auction that had long been in the hands of a private collector.

The two panels, both painted by the artist on a black bitumen background, have as their subjects Christ Crowned with Thorns, made between 1497 and 1550, and the Virgin from 1500.

The works are an example of the genius of Pietro Vannucci. Both panels have a leather covering on the back with elegant decorative motifs and the Christological monogram, as if to simulate the cover of a book.

Originally, the two figures were part of a diptych connected by hinges, intended for private devotion.

The two oil on panel works were created by Perugino in one of the happiest and most prolific periods of his life. In those years he was active in Florence and had the opportunity to get to know both Flemish painting and the light of Leonardo. He was also fascinated by the Venetian atmospheres of the lacuna, where he went more than once.

In the background of the panels there is no ideal landscape or perspective architecture but only the deep black against which the protagonists of the scene stand out. An unprecedented solution that Perugino used extensively in that period and which was at the center, in 2023, of the exhibition NERO Perugino Burri, organized by the Perugia Foundation.

Before passing over the decades, in various foreign private collections, it is possible that the Christ Crowned with Thorns and the Virgin were part of the collection of the Florentine intellectual Cosimo Bordoni, personal physician of the Grand Duke Cosimo III de ‘Medici.

In an inventory of the assets of the professional, who died around 1703, “two companion paintings of Perugino” depicting “the Madonna and Jesus” are mentioned.

The auction purchase of the two paintings will enrich the art collection of the Perugia Foundation, held in the Palazzo Baldeschi Museum, in Corso Vannucci in Perugia, where two works by Perugino can already be admired.

The two new acquisitions will be exhibited starting in mid-December.
