Ercole e Caco: il gruppo che avrei dovuto scolpire io
Il gruppo di Ercole e Caco che oggi vedete fare da pendant al David finto davanti all’entrata principale di Palazzo Vecchio, avrei dovuto scolpirlo io.
Il gonfaloniere a vita della repubblica fiorentina Soderini m’assillava e di continuo mi chiedeva se avessi accettato o meno la proposta di scolpire un altro gigante che potesse equilibrare visivamente il David.
Se il David simboleggiava la forza intellettuale e la vittoria della Signoria sui Medici, il gruppo di Ercole e Caco sarebbe stato un’allegoria della potenza e della forza fisica repubblicana.
Io avevo furia, dovevo andare a Roma: già sapevo che papa Giulio II m’aspettava per affidarmi qualcosa di grandioso. Non potevo fermarmi ancora in città facendomi attendere ancora dalla Santa Sede.
Pier Soderini s’era però autoconvinto che prima o poi avrei accettato quel lavoro tanto che il 10 maggio del 1505, quando già ero partito per la grande urbe, scrisse ad Alberico Malaspina, il Marchese di Massa, chiedendogli di mettere da parte un grande blocco di qualità per una scultura destinata a decorare Piazza della Signoria: l’Ercole e Caco per l’appunto.
Quell’opera alla fine fu affidata parecchio tempo dopo al Bandinelli. Pare l’abbiano fatto di proposito: proprio a lui che sempre cercava di imitarmi ma non aveva nemmeno un quinto delle mie conoscenze e capacità.
Insomma, il risultato l’avete sotto gli occhi anche oggi: non regge il confronto nemmeno con la copia del David.

I should have sculpted the group of Hercules and Cacus that you see today as a pendant to the fake David in front of the main entrance of Palazzo Vecchio.
The gonfaloniere for life of the Florentine republic Soderini harassed me and continually asked me whether or not I had accepted the proposal to sculpt another giant who could visually balance the David.
If the David symbolized the intellectual strength and the victory of the Signoria over the Medici, the group of Hercules and Cacus would have been an allegory of republican power and physical strength.
I was in a hurry, I had to go to Rome: I already knew that Pope Julius II was waiting for me to entrust me with something grandiose. I couldn’t stay in the city any longer by making the Holy See wait for me.
However, Pier Soderini had convinced himself that sooner or later I would accept that job, so much so that on 10 May 1505, when I had already left for the great city, he wrote to Alberico Malaspina, the Marquis of Massa, asking him to set aside a large block of quality for a sculpture destined to decorate Piazza della Signoria: the Hercules and Cacus to be precise.
That work was eventually entrusted much later to Bandinelli. It seems they did it on purpose: to him who always tried to imitate me but didn’t even have a fifth of my knowledge and skills.
In short, you can see the result even today: it doesn’t even compare with the copy of the David.
