Il Cristo Bambino scappa, ha paura e guarda con occhi sconcertati il cardellino che gli offre suo cugino. San Giovanni Battista ha pochi mesi più di Cristo e se ne sta dinnanzi alla Madonna con l’ucccellino fra le mani. La Vergine Madre guarda sconsolata San Giovanni. Il presagio di quello che accadrà al Figlio la disarma, la rende inerme dinnanzi a tanto orrore.

Perché il cardellino è fonte di tanta disperazione e terrore? Beh, l’avete mai visto questo simpatico uccelletto? E’ poco più grande di un passero ed è colorato di grigio, nero, bianco, marroncino, qualche tocco di giallo e ha il capino rosso. Leggenda narra che il cardellino, vedendo la testa di Cristo trafitta dalle spine, si fosse mosso a compassione e avesse iniziato ad estrarle una ad una col becco. Durante quest’impresa si sarebbe ferito a sua volta e il sangue di Cristo si mescolò con il suo. Da allora in poi la livrea del capo ha assunto la colorazione rossa.

The Goldfinch

The Christ Child escapes, is afraid and looks with disconcerted eyes at the goldfinch that his cousin offers him. Why is the goldfinch the source of such desperation and terror? Well, have you ever seen this cute little bird? It is little bigger than a sparrow and is colored gray, black, white, brown, some touches of yellow and has a red cap. Legend has it that the goldfinch, seeing the head of Christ pierced by thorns, had moved to compassion and started to extract one by one with a beak. During this undertaking he was wounded and the blood of Christ mingled with his own. Since then the livery of the head became red.
