Palermo si prepara ad accogliere la prima versione del mio Cristo Portacroce che scolpii per Metello Vari, erede testamentario della committente Marta Porcari.

Si tratta dell‘opera che abbandonai dopo aver tentato di integrare nei lineamenti il pelo nero comparso sul volto del Salvatore.

La scultura proveniente da Bassano Romano verrà collocata temporaneamente negli appartamenti reali del Palazzo Reale di Palermo e i visitatori avranno modo di vederla a partire dal 13 novembre.

Era il 14 giugno del 1514quando firmai il contratto per scolpire il Cristo Risorto o Cristo Portacroce che dir si voglia: un’opera a grandezza naturale che avrei dovuto realizzare in quattro anni di tempo. Il compenso pattuito fu di 200 ducati d’oro e l’opera, una volta terminata, sarebbe stata posizionata nella Chiesa di Santa Maria sopra Minerva: la chiesa romana più prossima al Pantheon.

In quel momento ero oberato di lavoro e i tempi si allungarono. La brutta venatura che emerse nel marmo mano a mano che toglievo il superfluo, mi indusse a cominciare una nuova opera con lo stesso soggetto da capo. Non potevo consegnare al committente un Cristo col volt deturpato da una brutta venatura nera.

Dovete sapere che il Cristo Portacroce venato è una delle poche opere mie, a esclusion fatta dei disegni, che viene fatta viaggiare.

E’ infatti appena tornata dall’Expo giapponese di Osaka e sarà il fulcro della nuova esposizione palermitana curata dalla Fondazione Federico II, in collaborazione con l’Assemblea regionale siciliana, il monastero San Vincenzo Martire – Monaci Benedettini Silvestrini, il ministero per la tutela del Patrimonio culturale, la Soprintendenza archeologia belle arti e paesaggio per la provincia di Viterbo e per l’Etruria meridionale e, infine, con il progetto illuminotecnico Erco Lighting.

My Christ Carrying the Cross with a Veined Face Arrives in Palermo

Palermo is preparing to welcome the first version of my Christ Carrying the Cross, which I sculpted for Metello Vari, heir of the patron Marta Porcari.

This is the work I abandoned after attempting to integrate the black hair that had appeared on the Savior’s face into the features.

The sculpture, originally from Bassano Romano, will be temporarily placed in the royal apartments of the Royal Palace of Palermo, and visitors will be able to see it starting November 13th.

It was June 14th, 1514, when I signed the contract to sculpt the Risen Christ, or Christ Carrying the Cross, as you might call it: a life-size work that I was to complete over a period of four years. The agreed-upon fee was 200 gold ducats, and the work, once completed, would be placed in the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva: the Roman church closest to the Pantheon.

At that point, I was overwhelmed with work, and the time was running out. The unsightly veining that emerged in the marble as I gradually removed the superfluous material prompted me to start a new work with the same subject from scratch. I couldn’t deliver to the client a Christ with a face marred by an unsightly black vein.

You should know that the Veined Christ Carrying the Cross is one of the few works of mine, excluding the drawings, that is being traveled.

It has just returned from the Japanese Expo in Osaka and will be the centerpiece of the new Palermo exhibition curated by the Federico II Foundation, in collaboration with the Sicilian Regional Assembly, the Monastery of San Vincenzo Martire – Silvestrine Benedictine Monks, the Ministry for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the Province of Viterbo and Southern Etruria, and, finally, with the lighting design by Erco Lighting.
