Michelangelo 550: Io nel mio studio dipinto da Eugène Delacroix
In occasione del 550 anni dalla mia nascita, vi propongo le opere che nel corso degli anni diversi artisti hanno dedicato a me.
Il pittore francese Eugène Delacroix volle dedicarmi tra il 1849 e il 1850 un olio su tela di piccole dimensioni, solo 40,5 centimetri di altezza per 33 centimetri di larghezza, in cui mi raffigurò pensieroso, nel mio studio.
Quale studio? Quello romano di Macel de’ Corvi o quello fiorentino di Via Mozza? Sembra che Delacroix avesse le idee confuse in merito.
Guardate infatti le due opere che si vedono alle mie spalle, in secondo piano. Sulla sinistra si vede una gamba del Mosè mentre dalla parte opposta è ben evidente la Madonna Medici che scolpii per la Sagrestia Nuova a Firenze.
E’ uno studio dunque frutto della fantasia di Delacroix che mette assieme l’ambiente romano con quello fiorentino.
Con il turbante in testa che mi teneva il capo al caldo in inverno e m’asciugava il sudore d’estate prima che mi finisse dritto negli occhi, indosso un corpetto nero, calzamaglia bianca e un più pesante mantello rosso.
A terra, in mezzo al pavimento, si vede uno scalpello.
Delacroix firmò l’opera che oggi si trova al Metropolitan Museum di New York in basso a sinistra.

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I propose the works that various artists have dedicated to me over the years.
The French painter Eugène Delacroix wanted to dedicate to me between 1849 and 1850 a small oil on canvas, only 40.5 centimeters high and 33 centimeters wide, in which he depicted me thoughtfully, in my studio.
Which studio? The Roman one of Macel de’ Corvi or the Florentine one of Via Mozza? It seems that Delacroix had confused ideas on the matter.
In fact, look at the two works that you see behind me, in the background. On the left you can see a leg of Moses while on the opposite side you can clearly see the Madonna Medici that I sculpted for the New Sacristy in Florence.
It is therefore a study born from Delacroix’s imagination that brings together the Roman environment with the Florentine one.
With the turban on my head that kept my head warm in the winter and dried my sweat in the summer before it got right in my eyes, I wear a black bodice, white tights and a heavier red cloak.
On the ground, in the middle of the floor, you can see a chisel.
Delacroix signed the work that is now at the Metropolitan Museum in New York at the bottom left.
