A partire dal prossimo 11 ottobre, il dipartimento di new York delle celeberrima casa d’aste Sotherby’s dedicherà otto aste alla preziosa collezione di libri rinascimentali che il bibliofilo T.KImball Brooken è riuscito a collezionare nel corso della propria vita.

Potrebbe raggiungere i 25milioni di dollari la vendita dei volumi tenendo in considerazione che fra quei preziosissimi libri fa la sua comparsa anche un primo manoscritto del trattato sulla pittura di Leonardo Da Vinci, formato da 375 capitoli arricchiti con da 56 illustrazioni a inchiostro eseguite dal maestro.

Dopo la morte di leonardo da Vinci, nel 1519, le pagine singole furono raccolte da Francesco Melzi che ne individuò i passaggi relativi alla pittura e li copiò scrupolosamente.

Stando a quanto riportato da Sotheby’s, il volume in questione potrebbe essere battuto per 180mila dollari.

Fra gli altri capolavori presenti nei vari lotti dell’asta è presente anche un ritratto di papa Pio V con la sua segretaria, realizzato e firmato da Giovanni Battista Capocaccia, per anni custodito nella biblioteca vaticana all’interno di un libro fasullo dotato di con la copertina in pelle rossa.

Le otto vendite, raccolte sotto il titolo Bibliotheca Brookeriana: A Renaissance Library, ripercorrono la storia della sua collezione di libri di Brooker iniziata nel 1959 quando, ancora studente alla Sorbonne trovò una prima edizione rilegata in pergamena delle rilegatura di pergamena, delle Orazioni di Cicerone e la acquistò per circa 50 franchi.

All’asta saranno presenti alcune copie del Terzo libro e di Regole generali di architettura, dell’architetto e teorico dell’architettura Sebastiano Serlio, la prima edizione della traduzione francese di Hypnerotomachia Poliphili di Francesco Colonna, rilegata nel 1545 per Marx Fugger.

Leonardo da Vinci: the manuscript with the treatise on painting up for auction but not only

Starting October 11, the New York department of the famous Sotherby’s auction house will dedicate eight auctions to the precious collection of Renaissance books that the bibliophile T.Kimball Brooken managed to collect in the course of his life.

The sale of the volumes could reach 25 million dollars taking into consideration that among those precious books also appears a first manuscript of Leonardo Da Vinci’s treatise on painting, made up of 375 chapters enriched with 56 ink illustrations performed by the master.

After Leonardo da Vinci’s death in 1519, the individual pages were collected by Francesco Melzi who identified the passages relating to the painting and copied them scrupulously.

According to what reported by Sotheby’s, the volume in question could be sold for 180 thousand dollars.

Among the other masterpieces present in the various lots of the auction there is also a portrait of Pope Pius V with his secretary, made and signed by Giovanni Battista Capocaccia, kept for years in the Vatican library inside a fake book with the red leather cover.

The eight sales, collected under the title Bibliotheca Brookeriana: A Renaissance Library, trace the history of his collection of Brooker books that began in 1959 when, while still a student at the Sorbonne, he found a first vellum-bound edition of Cicero’s Orations and bought it for about 50 francs.

At the auction there will be some copies of the Third Book and General Rules of Architecture, by the architect and architectural theorist Sebastiano Serlio, the first edition of the French translation of Hypnerotomachia Poliphili by Francesco Colonna, bound in 1545 for Marx Fugger.
