IL TORMENTO E L’ESTASI, titolo originale The Agony and the Ecstasy, è uno dei film più noti in assoluto che raccontano la vita di un artista: la mia. Uscì nelle sale nel 1965 e venne diretto da Carol Reed.

Non si tratta di un film basato su una biografia mia ma su di un romanzo. Tante infatti sono le invenzioni narrative come la relazione con Contessina ma tutte comunque riprese rigorosamente dal noto romanzo di Irving Stone.

Magistrale è l’interpretazione che Charles Heston fa di me: non sono pochi i momenti in cui mi riconosco nel suo modo di fare, di rapportarsi al terribile Giulio II. Il papa in questione è interpretato da Rex Herrison che si rifiutò di farsi crescere la barba per il ruolo assegnatogli.

Molto peso viene dato al rapporto fra me e Giulio II: anni tormentati quelli, ricchi di soddisfazioni, glorie alternate a delusioni cocenti.

La Cappella Sistina che vedete durante le varie scene non è altro che una riproduzione assai fedele ricostruita negli studi di Cinecittà a Roma. Non fu possibile per il regista girare direttamente all’interno della Sistina: il Vaticano gli vietò di trasformare un luogo di culto in un vero e proprio set cinematografico.

Perché le immagini della Sistina appaiono così scure? Il film fu girato assai prima del restauro degli affreschi e quindi ancora i colori erano anneriti da strati di colla animale, depositi di polvere, salnitro e dal nero fumo delle candele di sego.

Le cave riprese invece sono quelle delle Alpi Apuane e nello specifico del Monte Altissimo, sul comune di Seravezza (provincia di Lucca). Sebbene i marmi per la tomba di Giulio II non li scelsi lì, il regista preferì girare in quei luoghi invece che a Carrara, probabilmente per una migliore resa in video o chissà per quale altra ragione.

Sapete? Piazza San Pietro che compare più volte nel film non ha niente a che vedere con quella reale. Il set in quel caso fu allestito a Todi, in Piazza del Popolo, adoperando qualche escamotage per farlo somigliare a come appariva piassa San Pietro nel lontano 1508.

10 milioni di dollari fu il budget investito per la realizzazione del colossal ma gli incassi arrivarono a sfiorare solo i 4 milioni di dollari. The Agony and the Ecstasy: some not-so-known curiosities

THE TORMENT AND THE ECSTASY, original title The Agony and the Ecstasy, is one of the best-known films ever that tell the life of an artist: mine. It was released in theaters in 1965 and was directed by Carol Reed.

This is not a film based on my biography but on a novel. In fact, there are many narrative inventions such as the relationship with Contessina but all of them rigorously taken from the well-known novel by Irving Stone.

Charles Heston’s interpretation of me is masterful: there are not a few moments in which I recognize myself in the way of doing him, of relating to the terrible Julius II. The pope in question is played by Rex Herrison who refused to grow a beard for the role assigned to him.

Much weight is given to the relationship between me and Julius II: those tormented years, full of satisfactions, glories alternating with bitter disappointments.

The Sistine Chapel that you see during the various scenes is nothing more than a very faithful reproduction reconstructed in the Cinecittà studios in Rome. It was not possible for the director to shoot directly inside the Sistine Chapel: the Vatican forbade him to transform a place of worship into a real film set.

Why do the images of the Sistine Chapel appear so dark? The film was shot long before the frescoes were restored and therefore the colors were still blackened by layers of animal glue, deposits of dust, saltpetre and the black smoke of tallow candles.

The quarries resumed instead are those of the Apuan Alps and specifically of Monte Altissimo, in the municipality of Seravezza (province of Lucca). Although I did not choose the marbles for the tomb of Julius II there, the director preferred to shoot in those places rather than in Carrara, probably for a better video rendering or for whatever other reason.

Do you know? St. Peter’s Square that appears several times in the film has nothing to do with the real one. In that case, the set was set up in Todi, in Piazza del Popolo, using a few tricks to make it look like the San Pietro square back in 1508.
