Pentagon: Globe linked to Eisenhower damaged while being moved to Hegseth’s office
An artifact tied to the history of the Second World War—one that had survived for decades within the Pentagon—was damaged during an attempt to relocate it. At the center of the incident is a large globe associated with Dwight D. Eisenhower, the American general who led Allied forces in Europe during the conflict and later became President of the United States.
Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, had requested that the globe be placed in his office. However, the move did not go as planned; according to an account by The Washington Post, the team tasked with transporting the item lost control of it, causing it to fall onto its base and crack its spherical surface.
The relic never reached its intended destination. What was meant to be a routine move within the building has instead become a talking point—sparking both wry amusement and concern regarding the preservation of an object of significant historical value.
Eisenhower’s globe and its history at the Pentagon
Dwight David Eisenhower, known as “Ike,” was a key figure in the Allied victory over the Axis powers. A five-star general, he assumed supreme command of Allied forces in Europe in 1944 and spearheaded the planning of the Normandy landings. He later served as President of the United States from 1953 to 1961.
Eisenhower was also known for his keen interest in large floor-standing globes—tools that allowed him to study the world and track complex military operations on a global scale.
The Pentagon houses two such large globes, which, according to an on-site plaque, date back to the 1930s and were used by Eisenhower during the war. Over the generations, these objects have remained in the care of the successive military leaders who have occupied the building.
They serve as material evidence of an era when knowledge of the terrain, distances, and the positioning of armies was fundamental to military strategy.
What happened during the move
According to The Washington Post, earlier this year, Hegseth requested that one of the two globes be moved to his office. The globe in question has a diameter of approximately 76 centimeters—a size that necessitates careful handling, especially given the fragility of its materials.
Typically, the relocation of historical artifacts housed within the Pentagon is managed by specialized personnel. In this instance, however, the task was reportedly assigned to a team from the Secretary of Defense’s own staff.
The incident allegedly occurred on February 3. During transport, those handling the object lost control of it, causing it to crash onto its base.
The impact resulted in a tear several centimeters long on the globe’s surface, in the area corresponding to Antarctica. Furthermore, the spherical section detached from the metal mount that allowed it to rotate.
Damage extending beyond a surface break
An object of this nature preserves traces of its era—from the choice of materials and cartographic execution to its actual use and the history of its preservation. Consequently, any intervention must account for the artifact’s fragility and the need to maintain its integrity as much as possible.
In the case of the globe associated with Eisenhower, the surface rupture and its detachment from the metal mount constitute tangible damage that requires careful assessment. However, the information currently available does not allow for a determination of the full extent of the damage, nor does it indicate what restoration efforts might be necessary. For now, yours truly, Michelangelo Buonarroti, bids you farewell—see you in future posts and on social media.
