L’Opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è il dipinto a olio su tela della Natività, realizzato da John Singleton Copley nel 1776.

Singleton Copley fu un pittore molto attivo nel periodo coloniale e passò alla storia per aver ritratto personaggi in vista dell’epoca del New England.

Nato a Boston nel luglio del 1738, Copley era era solito dipingere scene molto accurate e ricche di dettagli, caratterizzate da una luminosità caratteristica della propria produzione artistica.

Nel dipinto della Natività, l’artista dipinse una moderna Madonna adagiata su un pagliericcio coperto con un drappo bianco e dei tappeti in stile orientaleggiante.

Il Bambino adagiato sopra un soffice cuscino porta la mano destra alla bocca mentre la Madre abbigliata di bianco e con il capo velato, lo contempla, sostenendosi il capo con la mano.

San Giuseppe in secondo piano è avvolto in un manto verde e sembra intrattenere conversando i pastori venuti per adorare il Figlio.

Un fascio di luce proveniente dall’alto illumina la scena mentre due buoi si vedono dietro la Vergine. Manca la raffigurazione dell’asinello che l’artista preferì sostituire con il cane in primo piano, simbolo della fedeltà.

The Works of Christmas: The Nativity by John Singleton Copley

The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the oil painting on canvas of the Nativity, created by John Singleton Copley in 1776.

Singleton Copley was a very active painter in the colonial period and went down in history for having portrayed prominent figures of the New England era.

Born in Boston in July 1738, Copley used to paint very accurate and detailed scenes, characterized by a brightness characteristic of his artistic production.

In the painting of the Nativity, the artist painted a modern Madonna lying on a straw mattress covered with a white cloth and oriental-style carpets.

The Child, lying on a soft pillow, brings his right hand to her mouth while her Mother, dressed in white and with a veiled head, contemplates him, supporting her head with her hand.

Saint Joseph in the background is wrapped in a green cloak and seems to be entertaining the shepherds who have come to adore his Son.

A beam of light coming from above illuminates the scene while two oxen are seen behind the Virgin. The depiction of the donkey is missing which the artist preferred to replace with the dog in the foreground, a symbol of loyalty.
