L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è la Sacra Famiglia dipinta a olio su tela fra il 1617 e il 1619 da Bartolomeo Cavarozzi.

L’artista volle dipingere una scena familiare in cui la Vergine stringe al petto il Bambino prossimo a compiere il primo anno d’età. Il Figlio mostra di sentirsi protetto e al sicuro fra le braccia della Madre e guarda lo spettatore tenendo le mani giunte.

La naturalezza dei protagonisti dell’opera è ciò che più stupisce. Sembra di essere al cospetto di una comune famiglia ritratta in un momento di tenera intimità familiare.

La Vergine avvolta in un manto di un blu intenso che cangia con una luminescenza verde grigia, appoggia il mento su capo del Figlio. Ha il capo scoperto e mostra un’acconciatura raccolta, decorata con un nastrino chiuso con un fiocco.

San Giuseppe appare un po’ più pensieroso e, mentre guarda lo spettatore, sostiene la testa con la mano destra.

L’artista Bartolomeo Cavarozzi era nato a Viterbo nel 1587 e arrivò a Roma giovanissimo per lavorare e studiare presso la bottega del pittore viterbese Tarquinio Ligustri.

All’inizio della sua carriera artistica abbracciò l’arte manierista della quale si percepivano i riflessi diretti nei suoi dipinti ma con il passare degli anni si avvicinò sempre di più al naturalismo caravaggesco.

The Works of Christmas: the Holy Family by Cavarozzi

The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the Holy Family painted in oil on canvas between 1617 and 1619 by Bartolomeo Cavarozzi.

The artist wanted to paint a family scene in which the Virgin holds the Child close to his first birthday to her chest. The Son shows that he feels protected and safe in the Mother’s arms and looks at the viewer with his hands clasped.

The naturalness of the protagonists of the work is what is most surprising. It seems to be in the presence of a common family portrayed in a moment of tender family intimacy.

The Virgin, wrapped in an intense blue cloak that changes with a green-grey luminescence, rests her chin on the head of her Son. She has her head uncovered and shows a gathered hairstyle, decorated with a ribbon tied with a bow.

Saint Joseph appears a little more thoughtful and, while he looks at the viewer, he supports his head with his right hand.

The artist Bartolomeo Cavarozzi was born in Viterbo in 1587 and arrived in Rome at a very young age to work and study in the workshop of the Viterbo painter Tarquinio Ligustri.

At the beginning of his artistic career he embraced mannerist art, the direct reflections of which were perceived in his paintings, but as the years passed he became increasingly closer to Caravaggio’s naturalism.
