La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Bambina col cane di Vincenzo Vela.

La piccola ritratta è la contessina Leopoldina d’Adda, abbigliata con una veste bordata di pizzo di Sangallo abilmente riprodotta nel minimo dettaglio dall’artista di Ligornetto.

Siede sopra una sedia coperta da un panneggio decorato con delle morbide frange. Già da questi dettagli si intuisce che la bambina viva in un contesto domestico assai ricco e molto diverso dalle case contadine dell’Ottocento.

Il padre della contessina era Carlo d’Adda mentre la madre Mariquita Falcò passò all’eternità mediante il dipinto di Hayez che la ritrasse mentre Miglioretti realizzò un suo busto ancora prima dell’adolescenza.

L’opera fu commissionata a Vincenzo Vela nel 1852, quando Leopoldina d’Adda da poco aveva compiuto cinque anni. L’artista ultimò l’opera due anni dopo, nel 1854, e la consegnò alla famiglia committente d’Adda assieme al Monumento Funebre di Maria Isimbardi d’Adda e all’Addolorata.

La bambina nella scultura sta giocando con il suo cane, un cocker spaniel. Stringe nella mano destra un biscotto e l’amico a quatto zampe si alza su due per prendere quell’irresistibile leccornia.

Il virtuosismo di Vela è evidente nella cura di ogni dettaglio della raffinata scultura. Osservate quei bottoni che ornano la veste e la resa delle scarpe indossate su dei calzini in cotone di cui si intravedono le righe della trama. Son privi di elastico e il bordo si piega su sé stesso.

Non cercate la Bambina col cane di Vincenzo Vela in un museo: appartiene a una collezione privata. Il gesso dell’opera però è esposto presso il Museo di Vincenzo Vela a Ligornetto

Sculpture of the day: the Girl with the dog by Vincenzo Vela

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Vincenzo Vela’s Little Girl with Dog.

The small portrait is the countess Leopoldina d’Adda dressed in a dress trimmed with Sangallo lace skilfully reproduced in the smallest detail by the artist from Ligornetto.

She sits on a chair covered by a drapery decorated with soft fringes. Already from these details it is clear that the little girl lived in a very rich domestic context and very different from the peasant houses of the nineteenth century.

The father of the countess was Carlo d’Adda while her mother Mariquita Falcò passed to eternity through the painting by Hayez who portrayed her while Miglioretti created a bust of her even before her adolescence.

The work was commissioned from Vincenzo Vela in 1852, when Leopoldina d’Adda had just turned five. The artist completed the work two years later, in 1854, and delivered it to the client family of Adda together with the Funeral Monument of Maria Isimbardi d’Adda and Our Lady of Sorrows.

The little girl in the sculpture is playing with her dog, a cocker spaniel. She holds a biscuit in her right hand and the four-legged friend gets up on two of her to take that irresistible delicacy.

Vela’s virtuosity is evident in the attention to every detail of the refined sculpture. look at those buttons that decorate the dress and the rendering of the shoes worn on the cotton socks whose weft lines can be glimpsed. They have no elastic and the edge folds over itself.

Don’t look for Vincenzo Vela’s Child with Dog in a museum: it belongs to a private collection. However, the plaster of the work is exhibited at the Vincenzo Vela Museum in Ligornetto
