L’Opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è il Paesaggio con il riposo durante la fuga in Egitto dipinto da Rembrandt.

Per salvare Gesù appena nato, un angelo apparve in sogno a Giuseppe e gli disse di portare in salvo la sua famiglia in Egitto.

Rembrand dipinge la Sacra Famiglia che riposa durante la notte, in quella frettolosa fuga verso la salvezza. L’artista però non fa occupare tutta la scena dai protagonisti ma preferisce dare più spazio al paesaggio notturno collinare che viene illuminato da diverse fonti luminose.

La Famiglia trova rifugio in quello che sembra essere un antro naturale nei pressi di un grande albero. Il fuoco viene alimentato da una figura inginocchiata, forse un aiutante che ha seguito la coppia con il Bambino durante la fuga. Le fiamme che squarciano la notte si riflettono nello specchio d’acqua antistante.

The Works of Christmas: Landscape with Rembrandt’s Rest on the Flight into Egypt

The Christmas painting that I propose to you today is the Landscape with rest on the flight into Egypt painted by Rembrandt.

King Herod, when he learned that a new King of the Jews had been born, ordered that all male children in Bethlehem who had not yet reached the age of two be killed.

To save the newborn Jesus, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to take his family to safety in Egypt.

Rembrand paints the Holy Family resting during the night, during that hasty flight to safety. However, the artist does not let the protagonists occupy the whole scene but prefers to give more space to the hilly nocturnal landscape which is illuminated by various light sources.

The Family finds refuge in what appears to be a natural cavern near a large tree. The fire is fed by a kneeling figure, possibly an aide who followed the couple with the Child during their flight. The flames that pierce the night are reflected in the mirror of water in front.

The oil painting on wood of the Landscape with the rest on the flight into Egypt painted by Rembrandt belongs to the National Gallery of Ireland and is so small that it does not even reach fifty centimeters per side.
