La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è il giovane Aristotele, opera realizzata nel 1870 dallo scultore francese Charles Jean Marie Degeorge e appartenente alle preziose collezioni del Musée d’Orsay di Parigi.

L’opera fu presentata dall’artista per la prima volta al Salon di Parigi del 1875 e venne subito acquistata dallo Stato Francese.

Fu collocata in un primo momento nel Giardini delle Tuileries e poi trasferita al Musée d’Orsay.

Charles Jean Marie Degeorge volle omaggiare il grande filosofo el momento in cui era impegnato a studiare nella scuola di Platone. A petto nudo e con una gamba ampiamente panneggiata, è assorto nei suoi studi.

Sulle gambe si vede il rotolo sul quale sono scritte chissà quali annotazioni mentre nella mano destra tiene una sfera che sembra voglia far cadere nella ciototola sottostante.

Aristotele era nato a Stagira in Macedonia, nel 384 a.C. Suo padre, Nicomaco, era medico alla corte del re Aminta III di Macedonia (nonno di Alessandro Magno). Questa connessione con la medicina e la corte macedone influenzò probabilmente il suo precoce interesse per la biologia e le scienze naturali.

All’età di circa diciassette anni, Aristotele si trasferì ad Atene per studiare all’Accademia di Platone, dove rimase per circa vent’anni, fino alla morte di Platone nel 347 a.C. Durante questo periodo, fu un allievo eccezionale e, sebbene sviluppasse un proprio pensiero filosofico, in alcuni punti si distaccò dalle dottrine del suo maestro.

The Icon of Wisdom: Young Aristotle by Charles Degeorge

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the young Aristotle, a work created in 1870 by the French sculptor Charles Jean Marie Degeorge and belonging to the precious collections of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

The work was presented by the artist for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1875 and was immediately purchased by the French State.

It was initially placed in the Tuileries Gardens and then transferred to the Musée d’Orsay.
