Michelangelo 550: io che presento a Leone X i progetti per il complesso laurenziano
In occasione delle celebrazioni del mio 550 anniversario della nascita, voglio proporvi oggi il dipinto dal titolo ‘Michelangelo presenta a Leone X i progetti per San Lorenzo‘ realizzato da Jacopo da Empoli per la Galleria di Casa Buonarroti.
L’artista dipinse l’opera a olio su tela tra il 1617 e il 1619 su commissione del mio pronipote Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane, amanti delle arti ma anche grande letterato.
Jacopo da Empoli volle raffigurarmi in piedi di fianco a papa Leone X de’ Medici mentre gli mostro il progetto per la scalinata della Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana.
Sul tavolo coperto dal tovagliato di velluto rosso, oltre al disegno in primo piano, si vede anche una porzione del modello in legno che feci realizzare per la Basilica di San Lorenzo a Firenze, oggi custodito a Casa Buonarroti.
Andando oltre con lo sguardo noterete che i due uomini che stanno in piedi, sorreggono il modello ligneo per la cupola della Sagrestia Nuova che ancora dovevo realizzare.
Il Baldinucci volle citare questo dipinto come i migliore che fosse stato realizzato per tutto il ciclo pittorico che decora la galleria di Casa Buonarroti.
Di questo dipinto esiste anche un disegno preparatorio di Jacopo da Empoli, custodito nel Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe della Galleria degli Uffizi, a Firenze.

Michelangelo 550: me presenting the projects for the Laurentian complex to Leo X
To celebrate the 550th anniversary of my birth, today I want to show you the painting entitled ‘Michelangelo presents the projects for San Lorenzo to Leo X’, created by Jacopo da Empoli for the Galleria di Casa Buonarroti.
The artist painted the work in oil on canvas between 1617 and 1619, commissioned by my great-nephew Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, a lover of the arts but also a great man of letters.
Jacopo da Empoli wanted to depict me standing next to Pope Leo X de’ Medici while I show him the project for the staircase of the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana.
On the table covered with red velvet, in addition to the drawing in the foreground, you can also see a portion of the wooden model that I had made for the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence, now kept in Casa Buonarroti.
Looking further you will notice that the two men who are standing, are holding the wooden model for the dome of the New Sacristy that I still had to make.
Baldinucci wanted to cite this painting as the best that had been made for the entire pictorial cycle that decorates the gallery of Casa Buonarroti.
There is also a preparatory drawing of this painting by Jacopo da Empoli, kept in the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Uffizi Gallery, in Florence.
